How can I check my link profile?

Regularly checking your link profile is an important onder part of search engine optimisation (SEO). Your link profile includes all backlinks pointing to your website and plays an important role in how search engines like Google assess the authority and relevance of your website. A strong, natural link profile can contribute to higher search results, while a link profile with lots of bad or spammy backlinks can be detrimental. Checking your link profile helps you identify these links and identify and address negative influences early on.

Here are the steps you can follow to effectively control and manage your link profile.

Using SEO tools

The easiest way to analyse your link profile is to use various SEO tools that are available. These tools provide comprehensive reports on the backlinks pointing to your website, as well as information on the quality and relevance of these links. Some popular tools you can use are:

  1. Google Search Console Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that gives you insight into your website's performance in search results. It also provides a section where you can see all the backlinks pointing to your website. This tool lists the top links and domains linking to your site. You can use this data to see which backlinks are valuable and whether there are harmful links among them.
  2. Ahrefs Ahrefs is a powerful SEO tool that provides comprehensive information about your link profile. With Ahrefs, you can not only see which websites link to your website, but also assess the quality of those links. Ahrefs also offers features such as analysing your competitors, monitoring new and lost backlinks, and discovering harmful links you may need to remove.
  3. Moz Link Explorer Moz Link Explorer provides a detailed analysis of the backlinks to your website. It provides insight into the domain authority (DA) of the websites linking to your site and offers a spam score, which allows you to see if certain links are detrimental to your link profile. It is a useful tool to quickly find out which links are positively or negatively affecting your SEO performance.
  4. SEMrush SEMrush is an all-in-one SEO tool that analyses your link profile and helps you discover weaknesses in your backlink strategy. You can also perform a backlink audit to check for spammy or harmful links in your link profile. SEMrush also allows you to generate a disavow file, which you can submit to Google to have harmful links ignored.

What should you pay attention to when checking your link profile?

When checking your link profile, there are some important factors to consider. This will help you determine whether the backlinks you have received are benefiting or harming your website.

  1. Quality of backlinks Not all backlinks are created equal. Search engines value backlinks from websites with high authority and relevance within your niche. Therefore, check that you receive links from reputable websites that are themselves reputable. Links from spammy, irrelevant or suspicious websites can damage your link profile and should be avoided.
  2. Relevance of backlinks It is important that the backlinks you receive are from websites that are relevant to your field. A backlink from a website that targets a onderopic that has nothing to do with your content may be seen as unnatural or manipulative. This can negatively affect search results. Make sure the backlinks you get are consistent with your website's onderopic.
  3. Variation in anchor texts Anchor texts are the clickable texts used to link to your website. Variation in anchor texts is important to maintain a natural link profile. If all your backlinks contain the same exact-match anchor texts, this can look suspicious to search engines. Make sure you have a healthy mix of branded anchor texts, descriptive terms and natural anchors.
  4. Natural link growth A naturally growing link profile means that you receive new backlinks regularly, zonder that there are sudden spikes or drops. An abrupt increase in backlinks can be seen as an attempt to manipulate the system, especially if these links come from untrustworthy websites. Monitor the growth of your link profile and make sure it grows organically.
  5. Check for harmful backlinks Backlinks from bad or spammy websites can damage your website's reputation. These links can come from link farms, websites set up just to generate backlinks, or from websites with little to no relevant content. SEO tools such as Ahrefs and SEMrush offer features to assess the toxic score of backlinks. If you see backlinks with high toxicity, consider removing or disavowing them.

Disavowing backlinks with Google's disavow tool

If you have discovered harmful backlinks that you cannot get removed, you can use Google's disavow tool. With this tool, you can ask search engines not to include certain backlinks in the evaluation of your website. This process can be useful if you have a lot of bad links negatively affecting your SEO performance.

To use the disavow tool, you need to submit a file with the URLs or domains you want to disavow. Be careful with this tool, however, as rejecting good backlinks can also have negative consequences for your SEO. Make sure you are sure a backlink is harmful before using the disavow process.

Regularly monitor your link profile

It is important to monitor and update your link profile regularly. New backlinks can come in constantly, and it is important to know whether these links are helping or hurting your website. By using tools like Google Search Console and Ahrefs, you can easily track new and lost backlinks and make sure your link profile stays healthy.

A healthy link profile is essential to the success of your SEO strategy. By regularly checking the quality, relevance and variety of your backlinks, you prevent bad links from affecting your performance. Keeping a natural and strong link profile onder contributes to better rankings and more organic traffic to your website.

Whether it's about content or technical adjustments, it doesn't matter. Martijn briefs this in a very clear way so that it can be implemented locally or by our head office in France. [...] Since the start of our collaboration, we have achieved great results. Keep it up!

When your online onder venture grows, expectations often grow too, in every area. To a large extent, we were in control of SEO and its interpretation ourselves. We found out that our own "general view" was no longer sufficient, so we engaged Bureau Onder. Surprising and clear. We have built up a fine collaboration, partly because Martijn also regularly visits our office with Eline or Mariska (depending on the case), which is very valuable to us!
