What is ChatGPT and how is it different from a search engine?

ChatGPT is a language model developed by OpenAI that focuses on human-like text generation. Unlike search engines such as Google, which help users by ranking websites and presenting direct search results, ChatGPT is designed to provide answers based on the information it is trained on. This data does not include real-time information from the internet, but comes from a large dataset collected up to a certain date.

Search engines use complex algorithms to index web pages and make them searchable. When you submit a query to a search engine, it searches the web for the most relevant pages, while ChatGPT does not access the internet for live searches. The answer ChatGPT provides is a synthesis of the data it has been trained with, zonder use actual searches or URL references.

Why ChatGPT is not a replacement for Google

There is a widespread misconception that ChatGPT would be a substitute for search engines like Google. This is not the case, as both technologies serve different purposes. Search engines are designed to provide access to information over the web. For example, when you search for the opening hours of a shop or the latest news about an event, a search engine will direct you to the sources you are looking for.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, is more suited to tasks such as writing texts, explaining concepts or giving suggestions based on the knowledge the model has. It cannot offer browsing or real-time updates. Say you have a question about the availability of a product in a particular shop, a search engine can direct you to the web shop, while ChatGPT can only give you general information about this product.

ChatGPT's role in the future of search technology

There is much speculation about the future of search technology and the role of language models such as ChatGPT in it. Although ChatGPT is not designed as a search engine, it could be integrated into search engines in the future to provide a better user experience. A hybrid system where search engines use AI-generated answers alongside traditional search results could be an interesting development.

Some companies, such as Microsoft with its Bing search engine, have already conducted experiments integrating AI models such as GPT into search technology. This allows users to quickly get answers to their questions, zonder having to click on multiple links. The AI can also provide additional context, which can be especially useful for complex searches.

What are the limitations of ChatGPT compared to search engines?

While ChatGPT can be useful in many areas, there are some important limitations compared to search engines:

  1. No access to live data: Search engines such as Google can retrieve and display real-time information. However, ChatGPT is based on datasets collected up to a certain point in time and does not access current events.
  2. No references to sources: Search engines provide links to websites where you can verify the information. ChatGPT, on the other hand, does not provide direct sources or external links. This can make it more difficult to verify the reliability of the information.
  3. Limited domain knowledge: While ChatGPT contains a lot of general knowledge, it can sometimes miss specific or niche information that is available through search engines. This is because search engines are constantly updated with new content appearing on the web, while a language model like ChatGPT is based on historical data.
  4. No personalised search results: Search engines can show personalised results based on your search history and location. ChatGPT does not take these personal factors into account and offers generic answers.

Can GPT replace search engines in the future?

Whether an AI like GPT could replace search engines is a point of debate in the technology industry. While AI technologies like ChatGPT can be used to improve search results, they are unlikely to replace search engines completely. Search engines have a number of strengths that AI models like ChatGPT cannot match, such as access to live data, deep domain knowledge, and the ability to consult external sources.

Nevertheless, AI models may play a bigger role in how we search for information in the future. Rather than replacing search engines, they will rather coexist with search engines and offer additional functionalities. This could, for instance, take the form of summaries of search results, or providing context and background information to search queries.

What is SearchGPT and how is it different from ChatGPT?

SearchGPT is a prototype AI search engine developed by OpenAI that attempts to combine the functionalities of language models with search technology. Unlike ChatGPT, which works completely offline and generates its answers based on historical data, SearchGPT tries to access the internet live to stay current. This would mean SearchGPT is one step closer to traditional search engines like Google.

The idea behind SearchGPT is that it is an AI-powered search engine that can not only search web pages, but also has a deep understanding of the context of a search query. This could potentially lead to more relevant and useful search results. However, as it stands, SearchGPT is still in the development phase and cannot yet compete with established search engines.

Whether it's about content or technical adjustments, it doesn't matter. Martijn briefs this in a very clear way so that it can be implemented locally or by our head office in France. [...] Since the start of our collaboration, we have achieved great results. Keep it up!

When your online onder venture grows, expectations often grow too, in every area. To a large extent, we were in control of SEO and its interpretation ourselves. We found out that our own "general view" was no longer sufficient, so we engaged Bureau Onder. Surprising and clear. We have built up a fine collaboration, partly because Martijn also regularly visits our office with Eline or Mariska (depending on the case), which is very valuable to us!
