What is a rich snippet?

If you have ever searched on Google for a recipe or product, you have probably seen a rich snippet before. A rich snippet is a search result with extra information that shows at a glance what a page or product has to offer. Curious about what exactly this means and how to obtain a rich snippet? What is a rich snippet and how does it work?

When you search for something on Google, you get to see a list of search results on the SERP. These search results usually contain a title, a URL and a short description. This is called a snippet. A rich snippet is a snippet enriched with additional information, such as an image, reviews or prices. This enhances the content of the page and gives the user more context before clicking on the page.

Why are rich snippets important?

Rich snippets can contribute to higher click-through-rate (CTR) because they give the user more information about the content of the page. If the user finds the page relevant to their search query, they are more likely to click on it. In addition, rich snippets can make your website stand out among the competition and contribute to your website's visibility in search results.

How do you obtain a rich snippet?

To get a rich snippet, you need to use structured data markup. This is a piece of code you can add to the HTML of your website to let search engines know what kind of information is on the page. There are different types of markup you can use, depending on the type of content you have on the page.

Google offers a handy tool called the Structured Data Markup Helper. This allows you to format and test the markup for your pages. After you have formatted the markup, add it to the HTML of your website. It may take some time before Google has processed the markup and your rich snippet appears in the search results.
